Spine and lumbar

When I first visited my orthopedic surgeon he checked my back and suggested exercised for my lumbar and then he was nice enough to explain to me the spine anatomy as well as what is lumbar. I had heard the tem spine a lot of times including “spineless”.

But I had never heard about the term lumbar and then never knew that spine was really what was the most important part of our body providing that important network of nerves and neural backbone with which our brain controls all the movements.

Here is my guide in simple language to what is spine and lumbar. I have read a lot of materials on the web for understanding the spine and how the back functions. I will be quoting those wherever I think more information is needed and which is wrong to be given by a non medico like me.

The basics first

If your run finger on the back you will feel that strong backbone or spine running though from just near your lower part of the neck till the lower end of the back where you tie your belt or rather down below at the place where you sit. This place is called the tailbone or the coccyx. There are problems that will usually occur for people who sit for long durations for their coccyx. No just joking! The tailbone problems will usually occur for people who have an incorrect coccyx by birth or they have it damaged in some accident. More on that part of the spine later.

The three major things connected with the spine are

Spinal column – The spinal column means the basic bones of the spine as well as the disc in the spine.

Spinal cord
– The nerves and the wires running though the spine are the spinal cords

Muscles and ligaments – For any structure to stand by itself we will need the support and that support is provided within the body by the muscles and the ligaments.

In my next post I will discuss about the Spinal column and its parts which includes the bones and the disc .

Human back and blogging

Welcome to backpedia and to your host and blogger who has a chronic back problem.
I have a severe back problem and this has been due to the endless hours of driving as well as endless hours of sitting in front of the computers.

I am a stock trading specialist by profession and used to work about 15 hours a day and then drive from New York City to Long Island. That meant sitting in the car for two-three hours daily.

This has caused a lot of pain and stress to my back. After a few years of this mindless routine and mundane routine my back started to give in. I was not able to even bend down properly and my physician advised me to change my lifestyle, my posture and start using some of the aids available in the market.

Now I have changed my lifestyle completely, taken up a job near my house, of course at a lower salary. That job is in the stock market stream but no live trading rather I give investment advice to a lot of wealthy families living in Long Island. An interesting change from glued to the stock market everyday and seeing the vagaries of the stock market.

As to why this blog, this is my way of spreading the knowledge about health, posture, aids and about some practical advice to keep your self healthy and fit.

The name is inspired by “Wikipedia” as well as the “shoepedia” sites.
